Great article - so much of pregnancy seems about comparing yourself unfavourably to the superwomen, it's nice to know I'm not the only one who failed to keep running for as long as she'd hoped!
I ran until 20 weeks when I had to give up due to the discomfort of the baby bouncing up and down on my bladder with every step. But the first 16 weeks were great!
I dropped racing and all forms of interval training, just sticking to normal training runs; I never pushed my body hard, but found I was running the same times over the same routes anyway- an incredible boost to the confidence when you're constantly exhausted and developing a baby belly!

I'd definitely recommend pregnant runnning, but obviously only if you're already a regular runner, and these are my tips:

1) Seek medical advice from your GP and/or midwife; ignore medical advice from everyone else.

2) Bear in mind your body shape will change- get a new bra before the straps on your existing one start making your shoulders bleed.

3) Listen to your body. Don't beat yourself up if you have a 10-miler planned for after work, but all you want to do is crawl into bed for an hour. Similarly, if you feel absolutely fine to do that half you entered months ago, do it.

4) Hydrating properly becomes even more important than usual. Annoyingly, so does an empty bladder, especially later on.

5) Enjoy it for as long as you can!

All the best,

Ali.
